Hôtel des Mille Collines
(4-STAR)
About the Lodge
Rwanda's most famous and historic hotel opened in 1973 as the country's first grand hotel. It was the real-life setting that inspired the Hollywood film Hotel Rwanda — during the 1994 genocide, manager Paul Rusesabagina sheltered around 1,268 people within its walls, with many appeals for help sent through a fax line the militia had failed to cut. Today it stands as an elegant four-star landmark on a leafy hill in central Kigali, offering breathtaking views over the "land of a thousand hills," from which it takes its name. Within walking distance of most of Kigali's key sights and about 10–20 minutes from the airport and the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
